3 killed, over 3000 trees uprooted as cyclone Nivar hits Tamil Nadu

 CHENNAI: The powerful cyclone 'Nirvana' hit the shores of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu in the early hours of Thursday but has affected many people in both the states. According to Tamil Nadu Additional Chief Secretary Atulya Mishra, three people have died in the state due to the storm, while three people have been injured. 101 huts have been damaged and 380 trees have been uprooted.

 

 On the other hand, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea in south-coastal Andhra Pradesh and north-coastal Tamil Nadu. Chennai may receive moderate rains till Friday. Meanwhile, flights have started operating from Chennai Airport after 14 hours. Suspended state transport services in Villupuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur and Pudukottai districts have been resumed from Thursday afternoon.

Today, Puducherry and its suburbs have suffered extensive damage due to the cyclonic storm. Electric poles have been damaged as many trees have been uprooted and water has entered several areas. Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy visited various areas today to assess the damage from the cyclone 'Prevention'. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have removed the fallen trees from the roads in Kamaraj Nagar area.
