4 arrested in hooch tragedy in Batala

Batala (Punjab),  Aug 01 :  The Batala city Police have arrested four persons including two women under  excise act from Hathi Gate, Batala late evening on Friday.

Parvinder Kaur, Deputy Superintendent of Police (City) said that the accused in illicit liquor trade were Trivani Chouhan and Darshana Rani alias Foujian  of Hathi Gate, Batala. Their sons Johny and Rajan too were arrested in hooch tragedy, she confirmed.

Having good influence in locality, DSP Kaur said that no one came to complain against them. “Yesterday, we visited the locality but no one came to complain against the accused. It was heart attack behind the death which most people said. We are too perplexed about the mystery behind the deaths.”

On Friday, When Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Tajinderpal Singh Sandhu and AETC Rajwinder Bajwa  reached the spot for preliminary investigation, one of the accused Trivani Chouhan took them to the house of the deceased, where mostly people kept silent. " Most of the deceased have been cremated, their families too believed that they died of heart attack," ADC Sandhu said.

Similarly in case of police, she (Chouhan) herself has given the name of the deceased to police of nearby locality.  Finding no complainant in hooch tragedy from nearby locality, Station Head Officer Mukhtiar Singh himself filed a complaint after thorough investigation. SHO Mukhtiar Singh said 6 of the bodies were cremated secretly without informing the police while two were hospitalised in Amritsar. "On the basis of investigation, we have registered a case against the four.", he added

Interestingly, the accused Trivani Chouhan had been booked for the first time in illicit liquor trade. She is also a contractual employee with Batala Municipal corporation,  DSP Kaur said. She said that no one can be spared whosoever he or she was. " Darshana Rani is sister-in-law of Trivani Chouhan and both are indulging in illicit trade," DSP Kaur added.

After the incident, The Punjab Excise team along with Batala police have raided more than 50 places where hooch were selling openly in nearby Batala and arrested 3 persons.

Meanwhile, Batala MLA Lakhbir Singh Lodinangal demanded strict action against the accused. "It is not Hathi Gate alone where liquor is sold openly. Police should impose more stringent sections against the accused," he said.
