4.54 crore gold paste seized at Mumbai airport, two arrested
MUMBAI: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized 8.230 kg of gold paste worth Rs 4.54 crore at the Mumbai airport. DRI has arrested two passengers in this connection and is interrogating them thoroughly.
DRI sources said on Wednesday that their team had received confidential information that a syndicate of passengers coming from Dubai to Mumbai was smuggling gold in the form of paste. According to the information, a team of DRI officials was monitoring the Mumbai airport.
As soon as the two suspicious passengers appeared at the airport late on Tuesday night, they were stopped. After a thorough search of both, 8.230 kg of gold in the form of paste was recovered. The gold is valued at Rs 4.54 crore, the official said.
Most of the recovered gold was hidden in the passengers' undergarments, making it extremely difficult to trace, the official said. Both the passengers were immediately arrested and further investigation is underway.
