47th meeting of GST Council to be held from June 28 in Chandigarh

(FMNews) -The two-day 47th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council will be held in Chandigarh from June 28. The meeting of the council to be chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will start at 11 am. It will end on June 29,the Finance Ministry sources said.

According to the Finance Ministry, apart from Minister of State for Finance MPP Chaudhary, the Finance Ministers of all the states and union territories and senior officials of the Central Government and the states will also attend the meeting. The meeting was to be held in Srinagar. But this meeting is going to be held after six months will be held in Chandigarh.

 

 

 Rationalization of GST rates and changes in tax slabs and exemptions, among others, is likely to be considered and a decision on this is likely to be taken in this meeting. The 14th meeting of the council was held in Srinagar in the year 2017 before the implementation of GST.

It is noteworthy that there has been a long-standing demand to rationalize the existing GST rates in the country. At present, there are four rates of GST, while a surcharge is also being levied on some items. Earlier, a consensus could not be reached in the meeting of the Group of Finance Ministers (GoMs) of the states on rationalization of GST tax slabs.
