50 feared dead in indiscriminate firing on church in Nigeria
Abuja(Fast Mail News) - Armed assailants opened fire and exploded indiscriminately on people gathered in a Catholic church in southwest Nigeria on Sunday. More than 50 people are feared to have died in this attack. Children and women were also among the dead.
People's Representative Ogunmolasui Oluwole said the attackers targeted the Catholic Church of St. Francis in Ondo state and the attack was carried out as devotees gathered there on the occasion of Pentecost Sunday, the Christian festival. The attackers fired indiscriminately with automatic weapons and hurled grenades at the people who had come for prayers.
Oluvole said more than 50 people, including children, were feared dead in the attack. Dozens of injured have been admitted to the hospital in the attack. Oluwole said he had visited the scene and the hospital, where the injured were being treated. Timileen, a member of the lower house of the Nigerian parliament, said at least 50 people had been killed.
Regarding this attack, the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has said that only demons can commit such a heinous crime. Our feelings cannot be changed by hatred and violence. We will defeat the demons with our love and brotherhood.
It is noteworthy that a large part of Nigeria is facing Islamic extremism, while Ondo is considered to be the most peaceful state in Nigeria.
