Accused molester in Kolkata arrested after three days

Kolkata, September 09,(HS) Within hours after city Police Commissioner assured Nilanjana Chatterjee of all necessary steps to arrest the accused young man who ran over her on Sunday night while she was trying to save a young girl from her alleged molestation, was nabbed and remanded to police custody.

According to the police, the accused  Abhishek Pande alias Amitava Basu, who was evading arrest for the past 72 hours, was finally arrested from the Eastern Metropolitan bypass late last night while he was on his way to a friend's' house.

Soon he was taken to the state police headquarters at Lalabazar for interrogation before he was produced in the city civil court today, as per police.

“We have been able to track Pande after keeping a close watch on his mobile phones and found that he was heading towards Salt Lake area when he was arrested by a special team,” the police said adding that however, he was alone in the car when he was waylaid.

Hailing Chatterjee for her unmatched bravery to save an unknown young girl from being molested inside a car without caring for her own safety, Kolkata Police Commissioner Anuj Sharma yesterday called up Chatterjee and promised her and her family immediate steps to arrest the accused.

Also communicating the appreciation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to her bravery, Sharma said the state government had decided to bear the entire cost of her treatment in the hospital.

Chatterjee suffered multiple fractures in her left leg after the car in which the woman was being molested by accused Pande, ran over her at Anandapur area on the southern fringe of Kolkata on Sunday night.

She underwent a major four hour long surgery at a city private hospital on Monday to fix her wounds where the doctors also performed a plastic surgery to help cover up her wounds. Her condition is stated to be stable and she has been advised a complete rest for the next few days.

“I want severe and an exemplary punishment to him for the crime he had committed,” Chatterjee said today after hearing the news of Pande's arrest and hoped that no such incident recur in the city in future.
