Another blow to the BJP in Bengal, actress Shravanti left the party

Kolkata,FASTMAIL - After the crushing defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party is constantly battling for its existence in the state. On Thursday, the state BJP has suffered another blow with actress Shravanti Chatterjee has announced to quit BJP.

On Thursday, actress Shravanti Chatterjee announced on Twitter that she was leaving the party, accusing BJP leaders of not working for Bengal. Actress Chatterjee had contested the Assembly elections from Behla West against the present Parliamentary Affairs and Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee. She had kept her distance from the party since her defeat in the elections. Sravanti tweeted, "BJP is not serious about Bengal's development. They (leaders) lack attitude to work for Bengal."

It was reported that on Monday, like Rupanjana Mitra, Shravati was also invited to the Chief Minister's victory rally but she did not go. There was talk that she did not want to attend the Chief Minister's function without announcing her resignation from the BJP.

In fact, Shravanti joined the BJP on March 1, just before the Assembly elections. After the defeat in the elections, veteran BJP leader Tathagata Roy had raised questions about giving tickets to Sravanti, Tanushree Chakraborty and Payal Sarkar. Since then, the actress had distanced herself from the party and speculations were already being made that she would leave the party. There is speculation that Shravanti will hold the reins of Trinamool Congress.
