Budget fails to address unemployment, farmers' troubles, claims eminent economist Jayati Ghosh

NEW DELHI: Eminent economist Jayati Ghosh has said that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's budget proposals lack a strategy to deal with unemployment, inflation and farmers' problems.

She said that small concessions given to the middle class are not enough to bring about the changes needed to boost domestic demand in India.

Ghosh told , "Unemployment, inflation, farmers' crisis, viability of small and medium enterprises and climate change are the central problems of the Indian economy and these have not been addressed."

She said, "No problem has been resolved in the budget. While the government has had to admit that these problems exist, it is not ready to make the necessary changes and strategies to actually address the problems."

She said that for example, there is almost nothing for farmers.

Ghosh said, "There are some minor measures which are disappointing. I think farmers across India were expecting some kind of statement about formalising the minimum support price (MSP) system, if not giving it legal backing.”

He said the government could have proactively done something for the 'desperate' youth of the country who want employment.
