Cyclone Fengal: Red alert issued for Tamil Nadi & Andhra Pradesh; to hit coastal areas today

 CHENNAI:  Cyclone Fengal, in the Bay of Bengal, is likely to hit the coast in Karaikal district of Puducherry and Mahabalipuram district of Tamil Nadu between noon and evening today.

The cyclonic storm Fengal in the Bay of Bengal is likely to  cross the Tamil Nadu coast between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram with a wind speed of 70-80 km per hour with gusts up to 90 kmph, the Indian Meteorological Department said.

 Heavy to very heavy rain has been forecast in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore districts, and Puducherry.

Meanwhile, Chennai and its surrounding districts have received light to moderate rains.

In Nagapattinam district alone, more than 800 acres of crops have been submerged. Kameswaram, Virudhamavadi, Pudupalli, Vedrappu, Vanmadevi, Vallapallam, Kallimedu, Iravayal and Chembodi districts are also affected.

Heavy rains are expected in the interior areas of the state till December 3. According to a state government spokesperson, all schools and colleges will remain closed today.

Due to Fengal, the sea in many coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh is also getting rough,according to reports.
