Dacoits decamped with jewellery worth over Rs 1 crore and Rs. 5lakh cash at gunpoint from Dhenkanal Mahabirod Gramya bank

Mahabirod(DHENKANAL):--In a daring daylight bank heist, in Mahabirod in Dhenkanal district, four masked men held employees of Odisha Gramya bank hostage and decamped with gold jewellery worth one crore apart from 6 lakh rupees in cash at gunpoint on Thursday, a police  said. Dhenkanal SP Gyana Ranjan Mohapatra along with other top police officials  reached the spot and launched a massive manhunt

Police said, about four masked men,wearing helmets, finding the bank in launch time and thin of customers, entered the bank through its unguarded front door at about 2pm. The bank manager was absent then and there were six bank staff.

While there were two dacoits at outside of the bank, the other two pulled out guns from the bags they were carrying and instructed all those present in the main room to move into a corner. “They threatened to shoot both employees and customers if they did not follow the instructions”.

Then they looted ready cash of rupees 6 lakhs and golden ornaments containing four boxes,police said.

 

 Dhenkanal SP Gyana Ranjan Mohapatra told TOI,”More than 4 people were involved in the Odisha Gramya bank dacoity incident.All the dacoits first  scared the bank staff at gun point and then looted cash of rupees 6lakhs and golden ornaments containing four boxes”.

The SP added, massive manhunt has been launched to nab the culprits who have made attempt to commit bank dacoity in the area in the past.We are checking the CCTV installed in the bank to see if anyone of these dacoits visited the bank earlier too,” he said.

Bank official sources also said that after entering into the bank finding opportune launch time dacoits herded them into a room and committed theft.They didn’t harm any bank staff except threatening to follow their orders.

It may be noted that some months back there was a snaching incident infront of Lodhani gramy bank in which the miscreants snatched rupees 15 lakhs from a old man who had withdrawn the cash from the bank.This is the second incident occurred in Mahabirod police station area in which banks are targeted by dacoits.

How ever,locals wondered how a bank dealing with so much cash functioned without a security guard.
