Death toll reaches 53 in Munnar landslide

Kochi, August 11: With the soldiers of National Disaster Response Force pulling out three more dead bodies from the debris around Rajamalai near Munnar on Tuesday, the death toll in Friday’s landslide reached 53. Efforts are on to find out the remains of 19 more people who were washed away in the Friday morning landslide.

The bodies were retrieved from a point 4 km away from the laayam (line houses meant for workers). Rescue workers said the plantation workers who were sleeping in the laayam when the landslide struck Rajamala, were carried away by the floodwaters, boulders, and debris into one of the tributaries of the river Periyar.

There are conflicting reports about the number of persons washed away in the landslide. While the revenue officials put the number at 80, locals in the area said there were more than 60 people in the line buildings owned by Kannan Devan Tea Plantation.

Currently rescue workers are in a last ditch effort to locate and retrieve the missing people. Since the landslide occurred in the early hours of Friday and the quantity of debris was increasing gradually, the chances of finding any survivors are bleak, according to rescue workers.

The rain has abated in the area and this has helped in resuming search operations.
