Dhenkanal: Masked men loot jewellery worth Rs.1 crore, Rs 5lakh cash at gunpoint from Odisha Gramya Bank in Mahabirod
Dhenkanal: In a daring daylight robbery in Mahabirod in Dhenkanal district, four masked men held employees of Odisha Gramya bank hostage and decamped with gold jewellery worth Rs 1 crore apart from Rs 5 lakh in cash at gunpoint on Thursday, a police officer said.
Mahabirod Police Station In-charge Pradeep Kumar Patra said, the robbers entered inside the Odisha Gramya Bank in Mabiro branch at about 2pm.
“The four masked men wearing helmets entered the bank through its unguarded front door,” the officer said.
Police said when the robbers entered the bank, there were only one to two employees and a customer present there. The office has the main room where the employees interact with the customers, the manager’s cabin and a chest room, where gold and money was kept.
Anurag Patnaik, the Manager of Gramya Bank,Mahabirod said, “Four armed men with their faces covered with masks and all four wearing helmets barged into the bank and started shouting asking all of us to stop work immediately. Initially, we did not understand what was happening. They asked us not to move and pointed guns at us. All of us panicked,” he said.
Patnaik said, “One of them stood guard at the main entry gate, while another one was pointing gun at those present and two others barged into my room. They asked the keys to the chest and took all the gold ornament packets at gun point”.
Locals suspect the possibility of an insider job as the robbers knew the time when there were no customers and knew about the office layout, including the strongroom. “We are checking the CCTV installed in the office to see whether anyone of them visited the office earlier too,” police said.
Locals wondered how a bank dealing with so much cash functioned without a security guard.
