'Gold smuggling has links with terrorism in India''

KOCHI July 18: Malayalam news channel Janam TV made a starting disclosure in its Saturday’s news bulletin that the NIA sleuths probing the gold smuggling racket busted by the Department of Customs, found that the proceeds from the illegal operation were being used for anti-national and terrorist activities in the country.

“The gold which is smuggled into the country through diplomatic route is sold in jewelry shops in the State and the profit is routed to terrorist activities. This money is used to fund even terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir,” the channel said in its report quoting a top NIA source.

The NIA had prior information about the link between the gold smuggling racket and terrorist outfits operating in the country. Interestingly, other than Swapna Suresh, Sarith Nair and  Sandeep Nair, most of the people linked to the smuggling were from the Malabar province of Kerala.

Various Islamic outfits have come out in the open demanding for handing over the investigation to any bodies other than the NIA.

The NIA and the Customs department probing the case are yet to issue any media release about the whole incident. The bits of news trickling out from the iron gates of these investigating agencies are the only  information available to the mass media. G K Suresh Babu, chief editor of Janam TV is a specialist in crime reporting, especially that of terrorist organisations and their operations in Kerala.

The last few days saw Customs officials taking into custody businessmen from Malappuram district who were in touch with the trio of Swapna Suresh, Sarith Nair and Sandeep Nair, the main brains behind the smuggling through diplomatic channel.

The Customs officials from Kochi raided a jewelry shop Hessa in Kozhikode and took into custody 3.45 Kg gold which did not have  any documents. Shameem and Jifzal, owners of this shop, too were taken into custody by the Customs.

M Sivsankar, the suspended IAS officer who was questioned by the Customs, has been asked by the officials to be ready for another round of questioning  at Kochi.

The close relations of Jayaghosh, the gunman of the UAE attaché at Thiruvananthapuram who slit his wrists and was found in critical condition in the city suburbs, were being grilled by the Police. Jayaghosh had tried to commit suicide by slitting his wrist reportedly after receiving phone calls from certain persons who threatened to kill him in case he disclosed anything about the gold smuggling to the investigators.
