Google to lay off 12,000 workers in what was once considered the safest job
In a letter to employees, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the company has conducted a rigorous review across product sectors to ensure current roles align with the company's top priorities. It is not clear which department is most affected by this round of layoffs.
Pichai says Google will hold a town hall with employees on Monday. While the news of massive layoffs is unfortunate, the development is not entirely surprising. Google stopped hiring in mid-2022 and Pichai also hinted that employees aren't working hard and shouldn't be playing around with money. It is not always possible to choose macroeconomic conditions.
While the Google CEO has said that affected employees will receive bonuses, a new report suggests that Google has delayed paying out year-end bonus checks for employees this year. This is quite unusual for Google employees, as the company usually pays the full bonus in January every year.
