Cancer cases expected to increase by 13% by 2025

It is estimated that in 2022, 14.6 lakh people in India were affected by cancer. Lung and breast cancer were the leading cancer sites in men and women, respectively. The study shows that lymphoid leukemia (boys- 29.2% and girls- 24.2%) was the most common childhood cancer (0-14 years). At the same time, cancer cases are estimated to increase by 12.8% in 2025 as compared to 2020.

Researchers say that the increase in cancer cases is due to the change in population dynamics and its growth. They believe that the old age (60+) population in India is expected to increase and specifically their proportion is expected to increase from 8.6% in 2011 to 9.7% in 2022. Let us tell you that to prevent cervical cancer, HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine has been developed in our country, which will be available by April-May next year.

"The estimated cancer incidence will change, depending on exposure, improvements in case findings, initiation of screening programs, and cancer detection and diagnosis techniques," the researchers said. Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya told the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday that there is an estimated increase in cancer cases and mortality due to it between 2020 and 2022 in the country.
