Jail inmate consumes poison

New Delhi, 18 July (HS) After being convicted by Delhi's Dwarka court for kidnapping, human trafficking and prostitution, accused Geeta Arora alias Sonu Panjaban, tried to commit suicide by consuming poisonous substance in the jail late Friday evening.

According to Tihar Jail spokesperson Rajkumar, Sonu Punjaban was lodged in Tihar Jail Number-6. On Friday evening, Sonu Punjaban consumed some poisonous substance. After her condition worsened, she was rushed to Dayal Hospital, where her condition was now out of danger.

T

he incident once again raised questions on the jail administration as to how poisonous substance could reach inside the jail under strict security and surveillance there. The jail administration is currently investigating the entire matter.

A few days ago, Sonu Punjabban was convicted under different sections of IPC for kidnapping and prostitution of a minor girl. However, the sentence is yet to be announced. Additional Sessions Judge Pritam Singh convicted Sonu and her associate Sandeep in the case of kidnapping and prostitution.

According to police sources, the victim fell in the love trap of Sandeep. Sandeep took her to a house in Laxmi Nagar and raped her. Later the victim complained to the police of Najafgarh police station on February 9, 2014 after which a case was registered into the matter.

The girl said she was also sent to Haryana and Punjab for prostitution.
