JD(S) leader taunts Karnataka government over 'hijab'

BENGALURU:The hearing of the controversy regarding Hijab in Karnataka was  held on Tuesday. During the hearing, all kinds of arguments were put in  the court from both the sides regarding the hijab.

The Karnataka government says that the Popular Front of India (PFI) is behind the controversy over Muslim girls wearing hijab in schools and colleges in the state. On the other hand, Janata Dal (Secular) Karnataka unit chief CM Ibrahim gave a different argument while targeting the Karnataka government. He said that be it’s  hijab or pallu, both are the same. Covering the head with pallu is the culture of India. India has history. This is the culture of India.

He said,“Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi used to wear pallu, even the President of India Draupadi Murmu wears pallu, this is the culture of India. Is that a veil  conspiracy by PFI? Be it hijab or pallu, both are same. Covering the head with pallu is the culture of India. India has history. This is the culture of India."

The Supreme Court bench of Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia will also hear on Wednesday petitions challenging the ban on wearing hijab in educational institutions in Karnataka. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said during the hearing that India is a secular nation. Even in constitutionally Islamic countries like Iran, not all women wear the hijab. They are fighting against it. Tushar Mehta submitted the order of the Government of Karnataka, which recommended that all students wear the prescribed uniform.

He told the bench, “A campaign was started on social media under the leadership of an organization called Popular Front of India. The social media campaign was designed to create a movement based on the religious sentiments of the people."

Arguing in the Supreme Court against the Karnataka hijab ban, senior advocate Dushyant Dave said, “Hijab adds to the dignity. When a woman wears it, it makes her dignified. Like when a Hindu woman covers her head with a sari, it enhances her dignity.”
