Kartik Purnima: Lakhs of devotees take dip in Ganga

Varanasi, 19 Nov(FASTMAIL) - On Friday, on Kartik Purnima, devotees took  holy dip in the holy Ganges in the holy river ganga at Kashi and offered deepa in the Ganges. Devotees started reaching the banks of the Ganges in the early morning for bathing in the Ganges in Kritika Nakshatra, a rare coincidence of the Ganga Snana(bathing festival). The process of snana continued from morning.

Devotees thronged the ancient Dashashwamedh Ghat, Sheetla Ghat, Ahilyabai Ghat, Panchganga Ghat, Assi Ghat, Kedar Ghat, Khirkiya Ghat, Bhainsasur Ghat to take a bath. Due to the devotees, there was a fair-like scene at the ghats. Police force was deployed by the district administration to maintain the security system.

It may be mentioned that in the ganjes Snana(bathing festivals) of the eternal Indian culture, the bath of Kartik Purnima has special significance. The importance of bathing in holy rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari etc. is also mentioned in the Puranas.

Taking a bath in the Ganges on this day gives equal results to bathing in the Ganges throughout the year. Kartik Purnima is also known as Tripurari Purnima. On this day Lord Shiva killed the great giant named Tripurasura.

Devotees imbued with these beliefs take bath in the Ganges. It is believed that on Kartik Purnima, Mahalakshmi is pleased by lighting a lamp in the Ganges or near Tulsi. Surya Lok is attained by remembrance-worship of Shri Hari. Donating gold in Kartiki destroys the troubles of planetary yogas.
