Kerala shuts down coastal belt of Thiruvananthapuram after surge in Covid-19 cases

 KOCHI. July18 (HS) Taken aback by the speed with which Covid-19 is spreading in the coastal villages of Thiruvananthapuram, state government on Saturday issued an order for shutting down the entire coastal belt coastal region from Anchu Thengu to the Kollam border, along the district.


Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had said on Friday evening that two panchayats along the coastal region were under the spell of community transmission and the only option before the government is to declare a total lock-out to prevent the further spread of the disease.


CM had described the situation in Kerala, especially that in the capital city as of ‘extremely serious’.


As many as 246 persons were tested Covid positive in the costal localities till Friday evening. Of these 233 were infected through contacts. Kerala, which had claimed to have flattened the Corona virus curve on May 8, has more than 11,000 active patients as on Friday evening. The state has 285 hotspots.
