Kerala's Kochi wins award for sustainable transport system

KOCHI:The city of Kochi in Kerala, widely known as the Queen of Arabian Sea, has won the award for the city with the most sustainable transport system in the country. The award was given away by the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri in New Delhi yesterday:

AIR correspondent reports, during the last decade or so, there has been a conscious effort in Kochi and its suburbs to shift towards a green and people-oriented mobility -- be it the Kochi Metro Rail, Kochi Water Metro, the Kochi Open Mobility Network or setting up the first solar powered airport in the world.

One of the biggest challenges as far as the city transport was concerned was the multiplicity of the various service providers, most of whom were in the private sector.

Efforts are now on to align the activities of various players through the formation of the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority or UMTA, which is being created. Although there is still a long way to go, the city has indeed made rapid strides towards achieving sustainable transport system goals.
