Kolkata to host International Poetry Festival

 Kolkata, 30 October, (HS): A galaxy of eminent poets from across the globe will participate in the  third  edition of International Poetry Festival called 'Chair Poety Evening' in this City of Joy - the cultural capital of India  from 1 to 5 November.

Being held for the first time  in a virtual mode because of the current global pandemic, the five day long festival would be participated by renowned poets from the USA UK, Macedonia, Italy, Estonia, The Netherlands and Israel besides those from all across India who would read out their poems and participate in subsequent interactive sessions  through on line and in virtual mode.

Among the widely acclaimed international figures from the world of poetry who have already confirmed their participation in the literary fiesta are -- Booker prize winning writer Ben Okri, Pulitzer Prize winning poet Vijay Seshadri,  Padma Shri Keki Daruwalla, Ashok Vajpeyi, Poet laureate of the Netherlands Tsead Bruinja,  Kaveh Akbar, 2020 Golden Wreath laureate Amir Or, TS Eliot prize winner George Szirtes, Nikola Madzirov, TriinSoomets, Elisa Biagini, Harry Man, Helene Cardona, Ajmer Rode and Christopher Merrill.


 Among the participants from India are eminent poets like Neelesh Raghuwanshi, Nabina Das, Ganesh Visputay, Manohar Shetty, Christina Davis, Bibhas Roy Chowdhury, Prabal Kumar Basu, Nilim Kumar, A.J. Thomas and Priya Sarukkai Chabria.

Expressing concern at the dangerous effects of the Covid -19 pandemic  not only  in India  but all over the world, Sonnet Mondal, poet and festival Director said the pandemic had not only affected a large section of humanity but also created huge  disruptions in every facets of life not witnessed in decades.

 But, he said, it had also created enough space for creative minds to come out and express their talents through art, craft, poetry or writings.

"Though it is very difficult to organise the Chair Poetry Evening online this year, but we are confident that  the 3rd edition of this festival would be no less than a festival of human realization," Mondal said adding, "Like several  other such festivals elsewhere in the world, we are happy to have been able to keep the show going even  in this pandemic to promote poetry from around the globe."

The five day session would be moderated by poets like Sarabjeet Garcha, Ashwani Kumar, Saima Afreen and Sunil Bhandari. A musical session by Singer and Music composer Prajna Dutta will be held this year as well.


The event would be available for viewing through live streams on the YouTube and Facebook pages of the Chair Poetry Evenings for a global audience on all five days.
