Liz Truss is new UK PM after defeating Rishi Sunak, will replace Boris Johnson
Rishi Sunak had a massive lead in the first five rounds, but Liz Truss won during the Conservative Party members' final voting. Liz Truss got 81,326 votes. At the same time, Rishi Sunak got 60,399 votes. A total of 172,437 votes were cast during the election, out of which 654 were rejected.
In this election, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson openly supported Liz Truss. He also asked party members and MPs to vote for Liz Truss. Sir Graham Brady announced the winner at 5 pm IST on Monday. Brady is the chairman of the 1922 Committee of Backbench Tory MPs and the Returning Officer for Elections. The new prime minister will make a short speech near Downing Street soon after the results are announced. This is a formal tradition.
On Tuesday (September 6) the new PM will be sworn in. The first meeting of the new cabinet will be held on Wednesday (September 7). After this, the Prime Minister will reach the House of Commons for the first time. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted congratulating Liz Truss on the victory. He wrote, "Congratulations to Liz Truss on being elected the next UK PM. I am confident that the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will further strengthen under your leadership. Wishing you all the best in your new role and responsibilities."
The 47-year-old Liz Truss will become Britain's third female prime minister. She defeated Sunak by postal ballot of all Conservative members. Boris Johnson was forced to step down on 7 July 2022 following the resignation of cabinet members. Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss were finalized as the candidates for the post of Prime Minister of Britain.
Boris Johnson had reached the Prime Minister's Office even before the results of the British Prime Minister's election were announced. Boris Johnson took power as the Prime Minister for 1139 days. Johnson will meet with Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday for the official transfer of power with the new leader of the Conservative Party.
