MP: Panchayat and urban body elections to be held by June 30: SEC

 BHOPAL:The State Election Commission held a meeting on Wednesday to review the election preparations to ensure compliance of the order from the Supreme Court.

State Election Commissioner Basant Pratap Singh said that panchayat and urban body elections will be held by June 30. It was reviewed  that if we have to announce the election today itself, then we are fully prepared for it.

In fact, during the hearing on Tuesday, the Supreme Court had directed to conduct panchayat and urban body elections in Madhya Pradesh at the earliest. Also, two weeks' time was given to announce the election.



 State Election Commissioner Basant Pratap Singh said,”In these two weeks we will announce the election. The commission will issue the notification for the elections by May 24. In both the elections, only SC-ST category will get reservation. Will finish one election (urban body elections) at the most from 10 to 12 June. Will finish the second election (panchayat election) by June 30”.

Apart from this, the State Election Commissioner will discuss with all the Collectors and District Election Officers through video conferencing from 12:30 pm on Thursday in relation to the preparations for the general elections of urban bodies and three-tier panchayats. Deputy District Election Officer and Election Superintendent have also been directed to attend this conferencing.

Panchayat and urban body elections are pending for two years due to Corona in Madhya Pradesh. It has been decided to conduct this election without Backward Class (OBC) reservation by June. State Election Commissioner Basant Pratap Singh will do video conferencing with the collectors on Thursday. The commission has to submit a report on the implementation of the order to the Supreme Court within two weeks.
