Nationwide curfew imposed in Sierra Leone amid massive protests against the government

FREETOWN: A nationwide curfew has been announced in Sierra Leone in response to violent anti-government protests on Wednesday. The order issued said that this decision has been taken after the death of a large number of people including security forces due to the protests.

Curfew was imposed from 3 pm to prevent violence in the West African country, which is facing rising inflation and fuel crisis.

Several videos circulated on social media showed large crowds of protesters and piles of burning tires in parts of the capital, Freetown. Other footage showed a group of youths pelting stones on a road filled with white smoke.

Daniel Alfa Kamara, a university student, said people are troubled by the country's justice system. Apart from this, daily price rise and economic hardship are big problems. The student said the violence began around 10:30 am local time when he saw clouds of tear gas rising outside his hostel room.

Vice President Mohamed Zuldeh Jaloh said in a video address that unscrupulous persons have started violent and unauthorized protests, due to which innocent people, including security personnel, have lost their lives. However, he did not say how many people died. He said that the government announces a nationwide curfew. The Security Zone has been authorized to fully implement this directive.
