Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha files nomination for presidential poll

 NEW DELHI(FMNews) - Yashwant Sinha, the opposition candidate for the presidential election, filed his nomination on Monday. Prominent leaders of various opposition parties including former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar and Samajwadi party president Akhilesh yadav were present with him on the occasion.

Sinha filed his nomination before General Secretary PC Modi at the Rajya Sabha Secretariat in Parliament House. He handed over four sets of nomination papers to Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Modi. Modi is the presiding officer in the presidential election.

Former Union Minister Sinha,  was the Finance and External Affairs Minister in the Central Government. The opposition parties had declared Sinha as their joint candidate on June 21.



 Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, National Conference's Farooq Abdullah, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav, senior DMK leaders  were present on the occasion of filing nominations.

Voting for the presidential election is to be held on July 18 and the counting of votes will take place on July 21.

Sinha is pitted against National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Draupadi Murmu. Murmu had filed his nomination on June 24 in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and prominent leaders of NDA constituents.

Congress's Mallikarjun Kharge said Sinha has the support of 17 opposition parties. He said that after the opposition parties come together, there will be a close contest in the elections.
