Plea of jailed ex-MP Atiq Ahmed dismissed by Special Court Prayagraj

PRAYAGRAJ: 28 October:-- While dismissing the plea of ex-MP Atiq Ahmed, the MP-MLA court in Prayagraj asked him to appear before the court on November 13. The special court also dispatched its order to the UP Home Secretary to ensure ex-MP's personal appearance at the court. He is currently languishing in Ahmedabad jail in Gujarat in a 2016 murder case.

He had earlier filed a petition to be exempted from being personally present at the court and sought hearing via video conferencing. Citing Prayagraj's distance from Gujarat, fear of encounter on the way to Prayagraj and poor health conditions as an alibi, Atiq Ahmed pleaded to seek exemption from personal appearance.

The jailed former MP and muscleman expressed apprehensions over his orchestrated encounter by political rivals along the way, but the court, hearing arguments of the government advocate, rejected Ahmed's petition. The Prayagraj district administration, on the other hand, cracked down vigorously on Ahmed and his aides and demolished or seized their properties worth nearly 400 crore. After demolition drive by Prayagraj Development Authority, over Rs 1 crore deposited in eleven bank accounts belonging to the jailed MP were seized under the Gangster Act based on a report by the Cantt Police. Following an order issued by Prayagraj DM Bhanu Chandra Goswami, a letter was sent by the police to concerned banks to attach the bank accounts and also seize the amount lying in them. The DM also asked for a compliance report to be submitted till Friday, October 30, in the case.

The clampdown is being carried out chiefly under Section 14(1) of the Gangsters Act, which allows attachment of illegal properties, in order to effectively curb gangsters, mafias and criminals and their associates, the officials said. A five-time MLA and a one-time Lok Sabha MP, Ahmad has 124 criminal cases against him. In the investigation of the case registered under the Gangster Act, it was revealed that after Bahubali Atiq Ahmad came into the world of crime; his 13 bank accounts were opened. Of these, there are seven different banks in Prayagraj, three in Parliament House New Delhi, two in Balrampur and one in Secretariat Lucknow. As part of the attachment of bank accounts, the police has sent a letter to the banks and seized the related accounts. So that after freezing the amount lying in these accounts, the transaction can be closed. According to Prayagraj Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sarvshreshtha Tripathi, after action over Bahubali Atiq Ahmed, preparations are going on in full swing to seize the bank accounts of history-sheeter and former block chief Dilip Mishra.
