Rajya Sabha approves introduction of 'Uniform Civil Code' bill amid uproar, opposition's demand rejected

New Delhi, Dec 09, (Fast Mail News):-- The 'Uniform Civil Code' private bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha. There was a ruckus in the house on this private bill introduced by BJP MP Kirorilal Meena. After heated debate, Union Minister Piyush Goyal asked why it cannot be introduced?

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar got the voting done after the opposition's demand to stop it. In which 63 votes were received in support to present against 23. After this the demand of the opposition was rejected and permission was granted to introduce the bill.

Three motions were tabled by the opposition to oppose the bill, saying it would break up the country and harm its diverse culture, but were defeated by a vote of 63–23.

Following strong protests from several parties, Union Minister Piyush Goyal argued that raising an issue is a legitimate right of a member under the Directive Principles of the Constitution. He said, "Let this topic be discussed in the House. At this stage, it is unnecessary to attack the government, try to criticize the bill."

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar then put the bill to a voice vote, with a majority of 63 votes in favor against 23.

In this session of Parliament, which started on December 7, there is a deadlock between the ruling party and the opposition on many issues. This is also the first session for Jagdeep Dhankhar as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. He had also sought suggestions from several members on ways to reduce disruption and improve functioning of the House before the commencement of the session. This session will end on 29 December.
