Regular Trains On Angul-Sukinda Rail Line To be Operational By February,15
ANGUL: The regular train operation on Angul- Sukinda rail line will be operational from february,15,according to the Indian railways after the sucessful trial run of train on this rail line recently.A trial run of a goods train on newly constructed Angul-Sukinda new Rail line was successfully carried out, yesterday. The 93.2 KM long new rail line is now ready for regular train operations. With this a mega rail infra project gets added to the rail-network of Odisha.
This new Rail-Line will provide a direct link between Iron-Ore rich areas of Joda-Barbil to Steel and Sponge iron industries in Angul region. It also provides a shorter and congestion free alternative route between Coal Mining Belt of Talcher to Coal Based Thermal Power Plant in Kalinga Nagar Industrial areas at Sukinda. This new line will be in close proximity to the Steel Plants in Angul region, NALCO and a cluster of Industries located in Kalinga Nagar areas of Odisha.
The project line will also reduce the distance between Rourkela Steel Plant and Dhamara, Paradeep Ports. Dispatch of finished products of Steel Plants from Kalinga Nagar complex to destinations in Mumbai and Delhi via Talcher-Sambalpur-Jharsuguda will also be shorter and cheaper via the new alignment as compared with the route via Kharagpur.
Although this project was sanctioned by the Railway Ministry in 1997, no headway could be made until 2010, as funding the project was a major bottle-neck. It was in this year that a Special Purpose Vehicle, namely AngulSukinda Railway Limited, was formed to execute this project in Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode. Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) was engaged by the Ministry of Railways to execute this project. Unfortunately, no big company came forward to invest money in this rail-line.
Being a PPP project, this project is not directly funded from Railway Budget unlike Khurda-Bolangir or Talcher-Bimlagarh rail- lines, where an annual budget grant is received from Railway Ministry. After considerable efforts, Sri Dilip Kumar Samantray, Managing Director of ASRL could mobilise Government of Odisha and Container Corporation of India to contribute equity for the project.
It was only in 2017 that the rail line work was taken up in all earnestness, with forest clearance obtained and a considerable portion of land acquisition completed. During the execution of the project, several hurdles by way of law and order problems and court stay orders were encountered, and on top of that, the COVID-19 Pandemic slowed down the project work for nearly two years.
Finally, the day has come when the much-cherishedAngulSukinda new rail line has been completed. This would not have been possible without the day and night efforts of a team from Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. headed by Sri Saroj Patra, Executive Director, and Sri P.K. Mohanty, Chief Project Manager, working under the guidance of Sri Pradeep Gaur, Chairman and Managing Director of RVNL for execution of the project.
The support and assistance rendered by the Government of Odisha, at every level has been exemplary. Similarly, to expedite the project, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Railways, has been regularly monitoring this project.
Above all, the leadership and efforts of Dilip Kumar Samantray, Managing Director of AngulSukinda Railway Ltd. have been commendable in ensuring that the long-awaited rail line is completed. This new rail-line is a milestone in the annals of rail infrastructure in the state of Odisha.
