Schools in Mumbai to remain closed till December 31

MUMBAI: Mumbai’s civic body has clarified that all schools, including private schools under the jurisdiction of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai will continue to remain shut till the end of 2020. Mumbai’s Mayor Kishori Pednekar today said that the decision has been taken in view of the rising COVID-19 cases in the city.

The order issued by Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai stated that one cannot deny the apprehension of a second wave of the coronavirus infection as is being seen in many other countries and states. Stating that the ensuing four to six weeks are very crucial in terms of prevention of a second wave and the infection in general, the order issued by Education Officer Mahesh Palkar said it is necessary to remain careful and hence all schools, be it public or private of all mediums will remain closed till 31st December 2020. He however added that the supplementary exams for class tenth and twelfth, as announced earlier by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education will continue as per schedule.

It may be recalled that the Maharashtra Government had earlier announced the reopening of schools for classes 9-12 from 23rd of November with  COVID-19 safety protocols.

However, in a statement issued today, state Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad has said that the final decisions on whether it is safe to reopen schools can be taken by the concerned district collector, ward officials and the education department. She said online classes will continue in places where the authorities do not feel safe to reopen schools.
