Separate District Demand for Talcher Gains Momentum

TALCHER: Demands to carve a new district out of the Angul district with Talcher as its headquarters are gathering intensity today as Save Talcher Forum(STF) has threatened to launch an agitation if the demand for a separate district is not met with.

The outfit has demanded a seprate district for Talcher as well  sub-division status to Kaniha block.The outfit spokes person said,”Though both the centre and the state government gets crore of rupees in the form of revenue, Talcher has become underdeveloped always. Despite substantial revenue generation from Talcher,where the Nation’s biggest power plants,Fertiliser Plant,Jindal plant,nine mega coal mines and several other industries the region has always been neglected by the government.If the district is formed, the region will be developed positively”.

“If the state government doesn’t fulfil our demandfor a separate district, we will go for an indefinite agitation in the days ahead”,Pradhan said.

Meanwhile,Talcher Surakhya Manch,another outfit also  submitted a memorandum to the chief minister to the collector today.The manch has urged the chief minister Naveen Patnaik to declare Talcher as a separate district in the line of new district formation in the state.It warned to launch an agitation if the Talcher is not declared as a separate district.


 The manch activists today  met the district collector and submitted a memorandum addressed to chief minister and governor demanding separate district status to Talcher.As the government has added Padmapur as a new district and there are other new districts are in the pipe line Talcher deserves to be declared a s a separate district. We will launch agitation if need be; if Talcher is denied separate district staus”,said Muralidhar Sahoo.

In another development, in a meeting held at Talcher today,a new outfit Talcher district Kriyanusthan Committee has been formed taking people of all walks of life. Former municipality chairman Keshav Bhutia was elected as the co-ordinator of the committee.

Bhutia said that Talcher deserved to be a separate district and government and has  urged the government to declare talcher as a separate district. He said If government denies the separate district status to Talcher then there will be an all out agitation for it.

It may be noted that  in 1993 when new districts were reorganised Talcher was one of the claimants for the new district.There were also agitation for the fulfilment of the demand by that time.
