Sitharaman's budget 2025 derailed despite so many engines; Congress

NEW DELHI: The Congress takes a dig at the central government over the Finance Minister’s statement on four engines of development in the Union Budget and said that there are so many engines that the budget has completely derailed.

The finance minister, Sitharaman said in her budget speech on Saturday that agriculture, MSME (micro, medium and small enterprises), investment and export are the four powerful engines of development.

Congress general secretary and communication in-charge Jairam Ramesh said in a post on 'X', "The Finance Minister talked about four engines - agriculture, MSME, investment and export. There are so many engines that the budget has completely derailed."

He said in another post, "When Dr. Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister, international companies wanted the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010 but the BJP under the leadership of Arun Jaitley had damaged this Act. Now, to please US President Donald Trump, the finance minister has announced amendments to the Act."

The Finance Minister has announced the revision of cost norms in Saksham aanganawadi and Poshan 2.0  - after many years of turning down this demand.

In a post in his “X” handle congress leader Jairam Ramesh said,”The FM has done nothing for the inclusion of breakfast in  schools, provision of a glass of milk, as is done in Karnataka through the Ksheera Bhagya Scheme, uoward revision ,in honorarium given to Anganwadi workers”.

The Union Education and WCD Ministries themselves have been pushing for these proposals for years, only to be turned down by the Finance Ministry,Jairam Ramesh said, putting questions as to what kind of investment in people is the Finance Minister envisioning without these basic provisions?

Congress MP Manish Tewari said, "I am unable to understand whether this is the budget of the Government of India or the Bihar government. In the entire budget speech of the finance minister, did I hear the name of any state other than Bihar? When you talk about the country's budget, there should be something for the entire country. It is sad that to keep the crutches on which the government is running stable, the development of the rest of the country has been put at stake."
