Sri Lanka's first Test captain Bandula Varnapura dies

 Colombo, 18 October (FASTMAIL) - Sri Lanka's first Test captain Bandula Varnapura died on Monday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Colombo.

Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC) President Shammi Silva said in a statement, "I am deeply saddened by the demise of Bandula Varnapura, who was Sri Lanka's first Test captain. He was an outstanding cricketer, administrator, coach, commentator and above all a good man.His demise is a great loss to the cricket community. "

He said, "However, I am sure that his name and deeds will always remain in our hearts. May he attain the supreme bliss of Nirvana."



 Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara said he was "very saddened" by Varnapura's demise and would be remembered for his service to Asian cricket.

Sangakkara said, "I am deeply saddened by the demise of Bandula Varnapura. He served Sri Lankan and Asian cricket immensely as a player and an administrator. It was a great pleasure to talk to him on everything. A good and gentle person. Our condolences. Are with their loved ones. "

The 68-year-old former cricketer Varnapura has played four Tests and 12 ODIs for Sri Lanka. Varnapura made his ODI debut in the 1975 World Cup, while in the longest format he played his first international match in February 1982.
