Supreme Court Asks Center To Produce File Related To The Appointment Of Election Commissioner Arun Goel

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has summoned the documents related to his appointment of the Election Commissioner Arun Goel. During the hearing before the constitution bench, the Center objected to showing documents related to Goyal's appointment. The Center said that there was no need for this, but the court bluntly said that you present the documents. The court made a scathing comment and said that we will see if anything wrong happened in the appointment. At the same time, the next hearing of this case will be done by the Supreme Court tomorrow i.e. on Thursday.

Talking about the powers of the Election Commission, the Supreme Court said during an argument on Tuesday that it wanted a person of strong character like TN Seshan as the Chief Election Commissioner. The Court said that the Constitution has placed a lot of responsibilities on the delicate shoulders of the Chief Election Commissioner and the two Election Commissioners. The Supreme Court is of the opinion that the Chief Justice of India (CJI) should also be included in the appointment committee of the Chief Election Commissioner. This will bring neutrality in the recruitment process.

Just before the Gujarat Assembly elections, retired bureaucrat Arun Goel was appointed as the Election Commissioner on Saturday (November 19, 2022). Goyal is a former Punjab cadre officer. President Draupadi Murmu on Saturday appointed Arun Goel as the Election Commissioner, a day after he took voluntary retirement from the job. The poll panel said Goyal assumed office on Monday. Following which Arun Goyal, a 1985 batch Punjab cadre officer, joined the election panel along with Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar and Election Commissioner Anoop Chandra Pandey.

Earlier, Arun Goyal was the Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries. He had taken voluntary retirement as per an order of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, which replaced him with Uttar Pradesh cadre officer Kamran Rizvi. He was earlier expected to retire on December 31. Before being appointed as the Heavy Industries Secretary in 2019, Goyal was the Secretary, Ministry of Culture. He has also served as the vice-chairman of the Delhi Development Authority.

The third post in the country's top election body was vacant for six months. The post of an election commissioner in the country's three-member commission was vacant since May 15 when the then Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar took over as the Chief Election Commissioner on the retirement of Sushil Chandra.
