Surat: Fire breaks out in ONGC plant, 3 people missing
Surat / Ahmedabad, 24 September (FastMail) - Three explosions lead to a huge fire that broke out in the ONGC plant in Hazira area of ??Surat in the early hours of Thursday. The blasts rocked the locals. The flames in the gas terminal are also visible from far away. A security guard and two workers are missing. The highway from Magdalla Chokdi to Ichapore Chokdi has been closed for safety. Also 24 other ONGC plants have been closed. More than a dozen fire engines are trying to douse the fire on the spot.
According to firefighters, the ONGC plant located in Hazira area of ??Surat has a fire, the gas line comes from Mumbai. The fire started at around 3.15 am on Thursday.
No casualties were reported in the incident, but a security guard and two workers were missing. Those three are being searched. A convoy of 108 ambulances is also present on the spot. All routes leading to the plant have been closed for safety. All employees have been evacuated from the accident site. People have come out from the surrounding buildings just after the explosion. Flames are visible in the sky from 7 to 10 kilometers away from the gas terminal.
In this ONGC plant, gas is supplied through the gas pipeline coming from Mumbai via sea. This line is 240 kilometers long. It can take several hours to extinguish a fire. District Collector of Surat, Dr. Dhawal Patel has stated the cause of the fire is due to gas leak. Relief and rescue work is in progress.
