US strongly condemns Myanmar military's decision to eliminate 40 political parties
WASHINGTON:The United States has strongly condemned the Myanmar military's decision to eliminate 40 political parties, including Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD).
US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesman Vedant Patel said that without the participation of all stakeholders in Myanmar, the election would not be considered free or fair. Patel said this in response to a question regarding the Myanmar Army's decision to liquidate 40 political parties, including the Aung San Suu Kyi-led NLD.
Myanmar's military has given political parties two months to register under strict new electoral laws, promising early elections. Fifty of Myanmar's existing 90 parties applied for registration under the new rules but 40 political parties, including Aung Sang Suu Kyi's NLD, were unable to meet the ruling military's registration deadline.
