Fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi, accused in PNB scam, arrested in Belgium

Mehul Choksi, the main accused in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam and a fugitive diamond trader, has been arrested in Belgium. He was arrested at the request of Indian security agencies. According to information, Choksi had traveled to Belgium for medical treatment. The Belgian police arrested him on April 11, following requests from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Choksi is one of the two main accused in the multi-billion-dollar PNB scam. In September 2024, a request for his extradition was made to Belgium. At that time, Choksi’s lawyers claimed he was unwell and battling blood cancer, arguing against his extradition. However, ED officials informed the court that if he could travel from Antigua to Belgium for treatment, he could also return to India for medical care. Following the extradition requests from the ED and CBI, the Belgian police arrested him.

Mehul Choksi is the prime accused in the PNB scam, which involves over ?13,500 crore. He has been residing in Antigua since 2018. The ED has filed three chargesheets against him. In 2019, the ED informed the Bombay High Court that Choksi was a "fugitive and absconder."
