ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy comes to Chennai

Chennai, Sep 16, (Fast Mail News):-- The ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy is currently at Chennai as part of its worldwide tour ahead of the marquee tournament starting on October 5. The prestigious cup was in display at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Friday (September 15).

The trophy will be in display at the Express Avenue mall in Chennai over the weekend, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association said during the event.

N. Srinivasan, former Chairman of the ICC, former President of the BCCI, and former President of the TNCA, spoke about the World Cup being held in India.

"First of all, the fact that the World Cup is being held in India, I think it’s a great thing. The World Cup has grown over the years from the time that the West Indies and Australia were the only two contenders and matches were played at Lord’s. From that point in time until today, more countries have played the World Cup," said Mr. Srinivasan in an audio-visual presentation.

"The competition has gone up to such an extent that it has made cricket more exciting, challenging, and spectator-friendly."

He further stated that Chennai was one of the first five Test centres and spoke highly about the knowledgeable Chennai crowd.

"One has to understand that Chennai was one of the first five Test centres. So, cricket—love for the longer version of the game—started long ago. The other aspect of cricket in Chennai is that, in every sport, they cheer for the winner even if (their) team is going to lose. I think that is unique to Chennai. I think Chennai understands the game very well. The overall fascination for cricket is very high in Chennai."

Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth reminisced about his time as the chairman of selectors during the 2011 World Cup and wished the current India team well for the upcoming marquee tournament.

"As we know, the 2023 World Cup is going to happen in India. Rohit, Virat, and Team India ‘You guys can do it! Don’t forget we were playing in India in 2011 when we won the World Cup when Dhoni and team lifted the Cup.' And don’t forget, Virat Kohli was there (at that time) and I am sure you (Virat) are there to guide the team. And, Rohit, I am sure you can do it. I am very confident Rohit and his team can win the World Cup."

Chepauk will host India’s first match against Australia on October 8 and will host four more World Cup matches.
