BJP-RSS People Are Enemies of Babasaheb Ambedkar: Kharge

NEW DELHI: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday alleged that the Modi government merely takes Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar's name, while the BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) are his true enemies.

Responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's accusation that Congress insulted Ambedkar, Kharge hit back PM Modi, stating that the ideological predecessors of the BJP were responsible for defeating Babasaheb in elections.

Speaking to reporters, Kharge accused the BJP and RSS of being Ambedkar's adversaries, claiming that Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and Communist leader S.A. Dange were responsible for his electoral defeat. He further alleged that the followers of those who burned copies of the Constitution are now in power.

On Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, Kharge emphasized the need for a nationwide caste census and demanded reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) in private educational institutions. He described the Constitution as Ambedkar’s gift to citizens, granting them social, economic, and political justice.

Kharge said, "Recently, at the All India Congress Committee session in Ahmedabad, we advanced this agenda and emphasized social justice."

He stressed the necessity of a caste census, noting that the central government relies on the 2011 census for planning, with no clarity on the 2021 census.

"We demand that a caste census be conducted alongside the general census to identify which communities have progressed in which areas. Plans can be made based on caste census data," he added.

Kharge accused PM Modi of invoking Ambedkar’s name without fulfilling his aspirations. He called for removing the 50% reservation cap and implementing reservations for SC, ST, and OBC in private educational institutions through constitutional amendments, which he claimed the Modi government has failed to enforce.

He also noted that when the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed two years ago, Congress demanded its immediate implementation with quotas for SC, ST, and OBC women. These five points were included in the Congress’s Ahmedabad session resolution, and the party vowed to fight for them nationwide.

Earlier, Kharge posted on X: "Babasaheb Dr. Ambedkar gave us a Constitution based on democratic values of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, which is the most powerful tool for social justice and inclusive development."

He said Ambedkar made inclusivity his paramount duty for the nation’s progress and unity, emphasizing the protection of everyone’s rights.

"On his 135th birth anniversary, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to his ideas of social change and justice. The Congress Party pledges to always uphold constitutional values and protect democracy."

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, posted on X: "Humble tributes to Babasaheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, on his birth anniversary." He added, "His struggle and contribution to strengthening democracy, ensuring equal rights for every Indian, and promoting participation of all sections will always guide us in the fight to protect the Constitution."

Born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, Ambedkar rose from humble beginnings to become a powerful voice for marginalized communities during the freedom struggle. He is credited with initiating numerous social reforms and drafting the Constitution.
