Constitution is not just a book, it is a promise : Rahul Gandhi

On Constitution Day, the Congress party accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of systematically weakening the principles, provisions, and processes of the Constitution while advancing the agenda of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and former Congress national president Rahul Gandhi said that he will stand first in the line of defence against every attack on the Constitution.

On the occasion of Constitution Day, Rahul Gandhi posted on X:"The Constitution of India is not just a book; it is a sacred promise made to every citizen of the country. A promise that no matter what religion or caste a person belongs to, whichever region they come from, whatever language they speak, whether poor or rich – they will get equality, respect, and justice."

He said that the Constitution is the protective shield of the poor and deprived, their strength, and the voice of every citizen. The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha emphasized that as long as the Constitution is safe, the rights of every Indian are safe.

Rahul Gandhi said, "Let us all take a pledge that we will not allow any kind of attack on the Constitution. Protecting it is my duty, and I will stand first against every blow directed at it."

He concluded, "Heartiest greetings to all of you on Constitution Day. Jai Hind, Jai Constitution."

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh posted on X: "On 26 November 1949, a Saturday, the Constituent Assembly meeting began at 10 a.m. under the chairmanship of Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Before the formal voting on the motion to adopt the Draft Constitution of India – which Dr. Ambedkar had presented exactly one day earlier – Dr. Rajendra Prasad addressed the Constituent Assembly."

The Congress leader referred to the speeches of Rajendra Prasad and the then Governor-General C. Rajagopalachari.

He claimed, "All this is part of the history of the making of India’s Constitution, in which the RSS had no role at all. In fact, after the adoption of the Constitution, the RSS’s role has been to attack and weaken the Constitution. Carrying forward that very role, the current Prime Minister and Home Minister are also systematically weakening the principles, provisions, and processes of the Constitution."
