Iran appoints Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr as new Security Chief

TEHRAN: Iran has appointed a new head for its Supreme National Security Council. The new security chief will replace Ali Larijani, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on 17 March.

Iran’s semi-official news agency Mehr, quoting the President’s office, reported that Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr has been appointed as the new Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC).

According to the report, Mohammad Mehdi Tabatabai, Deputy for Communications and Information in the Iranian President’s office, made the announcement on Tuesday.

It has been stated that, with the approval and consent of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Sayyed Mojtaba Khamenei, and on the orders of President Masoud Pezeshkian, Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr has been appointed as the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

Zolghadr will take over from Larijani. On 17 March, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani, his son Morteza Larijani, the Deputy Head of Internal Security at the SNSC Secretariat Alireza Bayat, and several bodyguards were killed in the strike.

Larijani was the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) and was considered the chief architect of the country’s defence, nuclear, and foreign policy. A few hours after Israel’s claim, the Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement confirming Larijani’s death.
