Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina Sentenced To Death For July Crimes

DHAKA: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has sentenced  former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to death on charges of crimes against humanity tied to the tumultuous demonstrations of last July.

The courtroom drama unfolded live on Bangladesh Television (BTV), as the three-member Tribunal-1, presided over by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, painstakingly read out the judgment.

Alongside Hasina, the co-accused, former Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, currently a fugitive, and former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who has pleaded guilty and, notably, turned state witness — the first in the tribunal’s history since its inception in 2010.

The prosecution’s formidable dossier spans 8,747 pages, detailing evidence, references, and a comprehensive list of victims, and charges the trio with five counts, including failure to prevent murder, constituting crimes against humanity under Bangladeshi law.

The city of Dhaka has been enveloped in an unprecedented security clampdown. Dhaka metropolitan police commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali issued a “shoot-at-sight” order aimed at deterring arson, cocktail bomb attacks, and any threats to civilians or law enforcement, as the verdict coincided with a two-day strike orchestrated by Hasina’s Awami League.

The strike, spanning 16–17 November, has already seen a spike in unrest, with at least 21 Awami League leaders and workers, barred from political activity, apprehended in Narayanganj in the past 36 hours.

As Bangladesh holds its collective breath, the ICT verdict casts a long shadow over the nation’s political landscape, promising repercussions that will ripple through the capital and beyond, even as the saga of justice, accountability, and political turbulence continues to unfold.
