Government's 'New Gift'! Rail Travel Becomes More Expensive from Today

(Fast Mail):--For millions traveling by rail across the country, journeys have become costlier starting today, Friday. Indian Railways had already announced that rail fares would increase from December 26, and the new rates have now been implemented.

Under this change, the fare for ordinary (general) class has been increased by 1 paisa per kilometer, while for mail, express, and AC classes, passengers will have to pay 2 paise more per kilometer. However, Railways has also provided relief to short-distance travellers. There is no change in fares for journeys up to 215 kilometers, ensuring no additional burden on daily commuters.

According to the new fare structure issued by Railways, passengers traveling less than 215 kilometres in ordinary class will continue to be charged the old fare. This means these travellers will not feel the impact of the ticket price hike. Railways states that this decision was taken keeping common passengers in mind, so that short-distance travellers do not face the shock of inflation.Fares Increase for Long-Distance Travel

On the other hand, passengers traveling more than 215 kilometres will now have to pay the increased fare. As per the new rules, there is an increase of 1 paisa per kilometre in ordinary class and 2 paise per kilometre in mail-express non-AC and AC classes. Railways estimate that this fare revision will generate approximately ?600 crore in additional revenue, which will be used to provide better facilities to passengers.

If a passenger travels 500 kilometres in a non-AC train, they will have to pay approximately ?10 extra on their ticket. This increase will gradually affect long-distance travellers. For instance, the distance from Delhi to Patna is about 1000 kilometres, and currently, the third AC fare is around ?2,395. But after December 26, 2025, traveling by Rajdhani train will require the passenger to pay about ?20 extra on the ticket due to the 2 paise per kilometer increase.
