Parliament deadlock likely to end; Lok Sabha to hold discussion on Vande Mataram and electoral reforms next week

(Fast Mail News):-- The prospects of ending the ongoing deadlock in the current Winter Session of Parliament brightened on Tuesday when the government accepted the Opposition’s demand for a discussion on electoral reforms in the Lok Sabha.

In a meeting chaired by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla with leaders from both the ruling side and the Opposition, it was agreed that the House will hold a discussion on the 150th anniversary of the composition of the national song Vande Mataram on Monday and on electoral reforms on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will initiate the discussion on Vande Mataram.Ten hours have been fixed for the discussion on electoral reforms, though the time can be extended if required.

After the meeting of leaders of all parties with the Lok Sabha Speaker, a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) was also held, which gave its approval to discussions on these two subjects.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju posted on X: “In the all-party meeting held today under the chairmanship of the Lok Sabha Speaker, it has been decided that on Monday, 8 December, from 12 noon, the Lok Sabha will discuss the 150th anniversary of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’, and on Tuesday, 9 December, from 12 noon, the House will discuss electoral reforms.”

 

 Later, speaking to reporters, Rijiju said, “We all want Parliament to function smoothly and members should get an opportunity to speak. MPs must get a chance to raise issues concerning their constituencies.”
 
 He added that there should be no unnecessary deadlock. The Minister said that after the discussions in the Lok Sabha, both topics will also be discussed in the Rajya Sabha.
 
With this consensus reached in the meeting with Speaker Birla, the deadlock in the Lok Sabha is expected to end.After the BAC meeting, Congress chief whip in the Lok Sabha, Kodikkunnil Suresh, told reporters: “Following the BAC meeting, it has been decided to hold discussions on Vande Mataram and electoral reforms.
 
On Monday there will be a discussion on Vande Mataram, which will be initiated by the Prime Minister. This will be followed by a discussion on electoral reforms on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the time can be extended if needed.”
 
Meanwhile, leaders of the Opposition alliance ‘INDIA’ (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) from both Houses will hold a meeting on Wednesday morning in the Parliament House to decide their future strategy.
 
The Lok Sabha witnessed a deadlock on Monday and Tuesday over the issue of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, with Opposition members creating an uproar in the House on this matter. The Winter Session of Parliament commenced on Monday.
