People Of India Are being Looted By Govt, Emptying People's Pockets: Congress

By Jagadananda Pradhan
(Fast Mail News):--
The Congress party has accused the government of "looting" people by increasing excise duty on petrol and diesel demanding an audit by the CAG as to how government policies benefited private companies.

Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh in a post on X said, "The people of India are being looted - on one hand the Modi Government is emptying people's pockets by increasing the tax burden, while on the other hand private and government oil companies are making profits!”.

“This is open economic exploitation!”,he said.

The truth is this:” In May 2014, excise duty on petrol ? 9.20 and on diesel was ? 3.46 of which is ? 19.90 on petrol and ? 15.80 on diesel under the Modi government — an increase of 357% and 54%!”,the congress leader said in a post in Hindi in “X”.

He said, the government earned ? 39.54 lakh crores from the petroleum sector in the last eleven years, yet did not give any relief to the public.

He asked the government while the crude oil was $108/barrel in May 2014, today it is only $65.31 — 40% cheaper, yet petrol and diesel prices are higher than during the UPA era!

“In 2014, petrol ? in Delhi was Rs 71.41 and diesel ? was Rs 55.49 per litre.Today the same petrol is ? 94.77 and diesel is ? 87.67 per litre — the public is being openly looted”,Ramesh alleged.

He alleged that while the government companies as well as private oil companies are earning huge profits from refining and marketing,  the common man is burdened by expensive petrol and diesel.

“The issue is serious!”,he said,

The congress leader demanded CAG should audit how government policies benefited these private companies.CVC and CBI should investigate whether there was deliberate negligence or collusion?

He asserted there needs to be an accounting of public money - accountability must be fixed!
