Rahul Gandhi in Lol Sabha claims of 70 lakh voters added in Maharashtra between Lok Sabha and Assembly polls

NEW DELHI: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said in Lok Sabha  on Monday that in the period of a few months between the Lok Sabha elections and the assembly elections in Maharashtra, the number of voters in the state increased to the same level as the population of Himachal Pradesh and in such a situation, the Election Commission should provide the data related to the voter list to the opposition parties of the state.

Participating in the discussion on the motion of thanks brought on the President's address, Rahul Gandhi also said that he is not making allegations, but the Commission should respond to it. He said, "I want to draw the attention of this House to some data related to the Maharashtra elections. Between the Lok Sabha elections and the assembly elections, people equal to the population of Himachal Pradesh were added to the voting list of Maharashtra. About 70 lakh new voters suddenly added in the lists."

The LoP said that more voters were added in Maharashtra in five months than were added in five years. Rahul Gandhi claimed, "7,000 voters were added in a building in Shirdi. Interestingly, new voters were added mostly in those constituencies where BJP got a lead. He said, "I am not making any allegation. I am just saying that the Election Commission should provide the data of Maharashtra elections to Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP)."

Earlier, Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Nationalist Congress Party (SP) had sought an answer from the Election Commission regarding the increase in the 'number of voters'. Congress had earlier claimed that in a period of five months, Maharashtra surprisingly increased by more than 50 lakh voters. The Election Commission had said in December last year that the names of voters in the state have neither been added nor deleted arbitrarily.
