Mojtaba Khamenei appointed as Iran's new Supreme Leader

TEHRAN: Iran has announced Mojtaba Khamenei as its new Supreme Leader. According to Iranian state TV, this decision was taken by the 88-member Assembly of Experts after several rounds of meetings.

Mojtaba Khamenei will take the place of his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in an attack in Tehran on February 28.

With this announcement, a new leadership begins amid regional tensions.Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, expressed gratitude to the Assembly of Experts.

He said that opponents of Tehran had hoped that Ali Khamenei's death would create a political deadlock in the country, but the Assembly has sent a message of stability by selecting a new leader.

In its statement, the Assembly of Experts said that Mojtaba Khamenei was chosen with strong support and appealed to the people of the country to remain united under his leadership.

Ali Khamenei had been in this position since 1989.The 56-year-old Mojtaba Khamenei will now be at the center of Iran's power. As Supreme Leader, he will hold the role of Commander-in-Chief of the country's armed forces and the Revolutionary Guards. He will also be able to make key decisions related to the nuclear program and the use of enriched uranium.

Mojtaba Khamenei is a religious scholar. After the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was removed from power, and Ruhollah Khomeini became the country's first Supreme Leader. After his death, Ali Khamenei held this position from 1989.

Mojtaba Khamenei is a religious scholar and was given the title of Ayatollah in 2022, which is considered a major requirement for becoming Supreme Leader. However, his selection has also raised concerns about security. Israel's military has already threatened to target Iran's next Supreme Leader.
