SIR becomes a curse in West Bengal! Two people allegedly committed 'suicide' after publication of voter list

KOLKATA: In West Bengal's Jalpaiguri and South 24 Parganas districts, two people allegedly committed suicide due to mental stress following the publication of the final voter list under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls.

The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has targeted the Election Commission and the BJP over these deaths.

A senior police officer stated that the body of Rafiq Ali Gazi (44) was found hanging from a noose in his room in the Gholpara area of South 24 Parganas on Wednesday morning. The officer said that Gazi's name appeared in the "under adjudication" category in the voter list, due to which he was deeply distressed.

The deceased’s family claimed that discovering his name in that category caused him severe mental stress.

In another incident, momo seller Gauranga De (62) was found hanging in the toilet of his residence in Jalpaiguri town on Tuesday morning. De's wife claimed that after his name appeared in the "deleted" category in the final list published on February 28, he became extremely worried.

Gauranga De's wife told reporters, "His name was not in the 2002 voter list, but he submitted all the required documents during the SIR process and also attended the hearing to get his name included in the revised voter list. However, in the final voter list, his name came under the 'deleted' category, which left him deeply troubled."

Linking Gauranga De's death to the removal of his name from the final list, the ruling Trinamool Congress posted on 'X' on Wednesday: "Another heart-wrenching tragedy has occurred in Bengal. In Jalpaiguri, an ordinary momo seller, Gauranga De, took his own life after the Election Commission's SIR mercilessly removed his name from the voter list despite him having voted for nearly four decades."
