Women's Reservation Law 2023 Implemented at Midnight During Parliamentary Debate
NEW DELHI: The Women's Reservation Act-2023, which provides 33 percent reservation to women in Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies, has been implemented from Thursday.
The Central Law Ministry has issued an official notification in this regard.Women will not get immediate benefit in the current Lok Sabha
Even after the Act comes into force, women will not get its benefit immediately in the current Lok Sabha. According to officials, the reservation arrangement for women will become effective only after the delimitation process, which is based on the next census, is completed.
The notification issued by the Central Law Ministry states that the provisions of the Constitution (106th Amendment) Act, 2023 will be considered effective from 16 April 2026.Congress MP Jairam Ramesh reacted to the Women's Reservation Law and said that this is completely strange.
In September 2023, Parliament had passed the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam', under which one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies are to be reserved for women.
However, it was already clearly stated in the law that this reservation will only be implemented after the delimitation process, which will be carried out after the 2027 census. Currently, the three bills being discussed in the Lok Sabha aim to prepare the way for implementing this reservation from the year 2029.
