Modi Govt Treats Workers as a Burden’: Rahul Gandhi Raises Questions on Inflation and Labour Codes

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, while referring to the protest by workers from various factories in Noida near Delhi, said on Tuesday that workers are the backbone of the country, but the Narendra Modi-led government has started treating them as a burden.

Rahul Gandhi supported the workers and claimed that the government hurriedly implemented four new labour codes last year, which increased daily working hours to 12, but there was no increase in the workers’ wages.

Rahul Gandhi posted on ‘X’: “What happened on the streets of Noida yesterday was the final cry of the workers of this country — a cry that has been ignored every time, a cry from those who have grown tired of asking for their rights.”

He said, “A worker in Noida earns ?12,000 per month, out of which rent alone is ?4,000–7,000. By the time he gets an annual increment of ?300, the landlord increases the rent by ?500.”

He added that rampant inflation “strangles life, pushes people into debt, and this is the reality of ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India).”Rahul Gandhi further said, “One woman worker told me that the price of gas keeps rising, but our wages don’t. These people must have bought a ?5,000 gas cylinder to cook in their homes during this gas crisis.”

He continued, “This is not just about Noida. This is not just about India. Fuel prices are skyrocketing across the world due to the war in West Asia, which has broken supply chains. However, the burden of America’s tariff war, global inflation, and broken supply chains has not fallen on Modi ji’s ‘friend’ industrialists. The biggest blow has been suffered by the daily-wage worker who earns and eats only for that day.”

The Congress leader said, “That worker, who is not part of any war, who has made no policy — who has only worked quietly, without complaint. And in return, when he asks for his rights, what does he get? Pressure and oppression.”

According to Rahul Gandhi, another important issue is that the Modi government has implemented the four labour codes hastily and without consultation from November 2025, under which working hours have been increased to up to 12 hours.

He said, “A worker who stands and works 12–12 hours every day still has to borrow money to pay his children’s school fees. Is his demand unreasonable? And those who snatch his rights every day — are they the ones ‘developing’ the country?”

As per the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, the Noida workers are demanding a minimum monthly wage of ?20,000.

He stated, “This is not greed; this is his right, the only basis of his life. I stand with every worker who is the backbone of this country and whom this government has started treating as a burden.”
