Thailand Cargo Ship En Route to India Attacked in Strait of Hormuz, 23 Crew Members Rescued

Amid the ongoing military conflict in the Middle East, a severe attack occurred on Wednesday on a Thailand-registered cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz near Iran.

The Royal Thai Navy released photos stating that the ship was badly damaged in the attack, but all 23 crew members on board were safely rescued.

According to maritime agencies and security sources, the Thailand ship was hit by a projectile.

Photos show heavy black smoke rising from the Thai-registered Mayuri Nari, with life rafts visible floating in the water.

In a statement, the Thai Navy said the ship was attacked "while passing through the Strait of Hormuz after departing from Khalifa Port in the United Arab Emirates."

They added, "The specific details and cause of the attack are currently under investigation."

The Omani Navy had rescued 20 sailors, and efforts were ongoing to save the remaining three crew members. However, all 23 crew members were later rescued.

The ship, near Oman, was targeted by a projectile, after which a rescue operation was launched.

According to officials, the Thailand-flagged bulk carrier Mayuri Nari was traveling about 11 nautical miles (approximately 18 km) north of Oman when it was attacked.

They said the carrier is 178 meters long, weighs 30,000 tons, and was heading to Kandla in India.

The Thai Navy stated that it is owned by the Thai transport company Precious Shipping.

Notably, following attacks by the US and Israel, Iran has begun targeting ships exporting oil from its neighboring countries, endangering shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and plunging the global energy economy into crisis.

It was not immediately clear whether this incident involved one of the three commercial ships that the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre had earlier reported as attacked in the Gulf on Wednesday.
